JAY – Selectmen, the Budget Committee and municipal department heads will meet Tuesday, March 26, to begin reviewing a proposed $6 million budget for 2013-14.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in the library at the Spruce Mountain High School in Jay.

Selectmen and the Budget Committee are scheduled to meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, at the school library with charitable and civic organizations. Selectmen are expected to vote that night on the final budget.

The proposed spending plan is $203,149.99 less than the current budget. The projected revenue of nearly $2 million is $213,081 less than what was factored into the current budget.

The proposed budget could be lower if selectmen decide not to grant all money requested to charitable and civic organizations.

If the budget is approved as is, taxpayers would be asked to raise about $4 million, which is about $10,000 more than they were asked to raise in the current budget.

Voters will consider the municipal budget by referendum Tuesday, June 11, at the polls.

There is less revenue projected for the Transfer Station due to only three small towns, Canton, Carthage and Fayette, continuing to go to the Jay station, Town Manager Ruth Cushman said Monday.

The town is also preparing on less state revenue sharing, she said.

One reason the budget is considerably less than the current year is because there was $200,000 raised last year for modifications to the intersection of Hyde Road and Route 133.

The solid waste disposal account is down $133,900 to $650,600 from this year’s budget, Cushman said. The 2013-14 budget includes reducing staff from six to five, she said.

The town government line is up $15,000 to $533,115 over the current budget, mostly due to Cushman helping the town search for a new town manager and then working with that person to get them up to speed, she said.

Cushman is hoping to retire by Thanksgiving Day, she said.

The Police Department budget proposed at $852,525 does not include money for a police officer in the school, she said. The money was also not added to the RSU 73 budget.
