LISBON — The Sunshine Hill Neighbor’s program of the Lisbon Recreation Department spent the past year raising funds to purchase a vehicle for their trips. A combination of private donations, Moxie Car Show proceeds and the Friday meals have made it possible to purchase the handicapped accessible mini bus.

The program began several years ago with a grant from the Maine Community Foundation with the expectation it would become self-supporting. The program serves about 70 lunches on Fridays, and takes monthly excursions to museums and other places. For a full schedule, call the rec department at 353-2289.

“We are proud to say that no tax dollars were used to purchase the bus. In addition, all future funds raised from the Moxie Car Show will pay for gas, maintenance and other costs associated with transportation,” said Mark Stevens, recreation director.

This was a collaborative effort among many local businesses.

“We are so excited to have our own vehicle,” said Aline Strout, Lisbon Recreation senior’s coordinator. “Before this we had to rent a van for each trip and were limited to how many trips we could take. This will enable us to do so much more for our senior population.”
