100 years ago, 1913
Martin Keith of Auburn Heights has his new atelier (workshop) all ready for gem cutting and has already done some very fine work in that line. He has put in the latest improved machinery for lapidary work and some of the gems that he has cut will compare with the best in the country. The great pocket that was opened at Mt. Apatite the other day has furnished him with some rare gem crystals and these he is now cutting. Mr. Keith has a rare aptitude for the business and his reputation is bound to grow. He believes that gem cutting in Maine is in its infancy but is bound to grow into a great industry in which Auburn will stand in the forefront.

50 years ago, 1963
At the Maine booth at the All-States Bazaar of the Women’s National Democratic Club yesterday in Washington, there was a Lewiston touch. Mrs. Frank M. Coffin, wife of Maine’s former Congressman, was in charge of the booth which was stocked with all kinds of Maine products, and she received plenty of help from her mother-in-law, Mrs. Ruth Morey Coffin of Lewiston. The items on sale at the booth ranged from canned goods to embroideries and hand-made pottery and loafers.

25 years ago, 1988
Edward Little High School and Lewiston High School will advance to the state One-Act Play Festival in Skowhegan April 8-9 along with eight other high schools judge to have excellent performances in regional competition at Bath this weekend. “The Importance of Being Earnest” by Oscar Wilde was chosen for the ELHS performers by Penny Davis-Dublin, English teacher and drama coach at that school. Lewiston High School performed “Asylum” by Jerome McDonough under the direction of Pat Brookhouse, a junior high school teacher and member of the Maine Drama Council.
