AUBURN — The L/A Senior Adult Hockey League will be hosting final summer league registrations this Friday, April 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Pond House near Ingersoll Ice Arena in Auburn.

Players must be 25 years of age. Registration fee will be $260 for those currently playing and registered in the league; $285 for new players. The registration is for all returning players as well as new players wanting to enter the league. All new players will have their names placed on the draft list. The player draft will be held on Sunday, April 7. The amount of new players entering the league will be based on the amount of openings.

The season is scheduled to start the weekend of April 12-14. Games will be played on Friday and Sunday nights, one game a week. Season ends late August.

Wiegman wins Hall scholarship

TURNER— Madeline Wiegman, a senior at Leavitt Area High School, will be honored by the Maine Sports Hall of Fame at its 38th annual banquet and induction ceremony on Sunday, May 5 at Augusta Civic Center.

Wiegman is among five student-athletes who will receive $5,000 scholarships. Other scholarship recipients include Georgia Bolduc, Waterville High School; Caitlin Bucksbaumof Falmouth High School;  Adrienne Carmack, John Bapst High School; and Evan Worster, Forest Hills High School.

An accomplished participant in both cross country running, Nordic skiing and outdoor track and field, Wiegman has distinguished herself as a student-athlete. One of the top runners in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference, Wiegman was a second-team all-conference performer in 2010 and was a first team all-star during her junior season. She has emerged throughout her career as a team leader and has been recognized by coaches and peers for her exemplary sportsmanship.

Wiegman’s performances in Nordic skiing have earned her the reputation of being one of the top performers in the state. She was named as a second-team All-KVAC athlete as both a freshman and a sophomore, and was fifth in Western Maine Class B cross country skiing championships in 2011. During her junior year, she was the Class A Nordic Skiing Classic state titlist and help lead the Hornets to the Class A Nordic Skiing team state championship. She was selected to the Maine State Nordic Team in 2011 and 2012.

In addition to her involvement in athletics, Wiegman has been very active in a number of co-curricular clubs during her time at Leavitt. A member of the National Honor Society, she has served as class secretary and participated in both the Key Club and the Latin Club. Wiegman is also an avid equestrian and has been horseback riding for ten years. She has been a member of the Pony Club for three years and was on the fifth place team at the Eastern United States Pony Club Championships in 2010.

Wiegman has a career average of 96.8636 and ranks in the top five percent of her graduating class. During her four years, she has taken a challenging course load that includes a number of Advanced Placement classes. Upon graduation, she plans to attend either the University of Vermont or the University of Rhode Island. She is the daughter of Jan and Vicky Wiegman and lives in Leeds.

In addition to the scholar-athletes, 10 new members will be inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame: Douglas Brown, MD, William Cohen, Ricky Craven, Paula Doughty, Gary Fifield, Skip Robinson, Bob Russo, Paul Vachon, Manchester Wheeler and John Wolfgram.

Richard Austin, Rumford, will receive the outstanding achievement award. Tickets are $40 for members of the Maine Sports Hall of Fame and $45 for non-members. A reserved table for 10 is $400. Tickets may be purchased until April 27. Tickets will not be sold at the door. A social hour is scheduled for 11 a.m. The dinner buffet will begin promptly at noon.

Western Mountain Cal Ripken tryouts

The Western Mountain Cal Ripken Baseball League of the Rumford, Mexico, Dixfield area is announcing its tryouts for major leagues, ages 9-12 on April 6 at Dirigo High School from 10 a.m. to noon.

Prior to tryouts, there will be a coach’s meeting for both major and minor leagues from 8 to 10 a.m. All coaches are invited and strongly encouraged to attend.

For tryouts, the cut off date is April 30 for turning 9 or not turning 13. All new interested boys and girls ages 9 to 12 who want to play baseball must try out, unless they were already on a previous roster.

As registration was March 29th and 30th for the league, all non-registered players must register prior to tryouts at their town’s local recreation center: Rumford(GRCC), Mexico, Roxbury and Byron (River Valley Rec.), Dixfield (Dixfield Rec.), Peru and Canton (Peru Rec.), Rumford Point and Andover (Rumford Point Baseball).

Any appropriate aged player who registers after tryouts will not be automatically put on a roster and will be evaluated by a Western Maine Cal Ripken representative to determine their qualification for major and minor league play. Any player who was on a previous roster and doesn’t register before tryouts, isn’t guaranteed to be placed on the same team, depending on the town in which they live.
