100 years ago, 1913
After a lively chase, James Hamilton, a Spanish War hero, was captured Thursday by Officer James Gauthier of the Lewiston police force. Hamilton, a trusty at the county jail in Auburn, was immediately placed behind the bars. It seems that Hamilton calmly walked out of the jail Wednesday afternoon, and he kept right on walking, forgetting that he was a trusty. Gauthier caught sight of Hamilton near the Grand Truck station on Lincoln street and he gave chase. But Hamilton put on extra steam and flew across the railroad bridge to Auburn. Hamilton had not gone far on the other side of the river before he was apprehended.

50 years ago, 1963
Granting Auburn firemen and policemen seven paid holidays, and all municipal employes with ten years of service three weeks of paid vacation appeared to meet with more general approval of the city council last night than any other plan offered as a substitute for general wage increase requests. The council spent some time discussing, with five representatives of the police department, their pleas for wage increases and other benefits, City Manager Woodbury E. Brackett suggested that whatever the council decided to do, it should treat all municipal employes equally.

Junior Achievement of Lewiston-Auburn held its 11th annual Future Unlimited Banquet at the Ramada Inn, Pleasant St., Lewiston. Fifty-one Junior Achievement young executives were joined by 100 adults, including parents and area business executives. JA Presidents spoke on their companies and recognized top achievers. Presidents are Steve Martel, AMICA; Tina Valcourt, MASTERSTEP; Tammy Morrill, TOPS; and Melanie Keough, St. Elmet’s Alliance.
