When does a piano hop like a kangaroo, a violin bray like a donkey, and a cello swim like a swan? In ”

,” of course!

PORTLAND — The Portland Symphony Orchestra will present the newest in its series of Discovery concerts at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 19, at Merrill Auditorium.

PSO music director and conductor, Robert Moody, will lead the orchestra in the wildly adventurous “Carnival of Animals” by French composer Saint Saens. Guests will be treated to a variety of “animal sounds” as the piece follows a parade of animals marching from the zoo.

Ranging from the slow string rendition of a tortoise’s walk to the bass and piano interpretation of an elephant’s heavy stride, the audience will hear the full range of the orchestra in this musical comedy. The concert will be narrated by Portland actor Laura Harris, a frequent PSO KinderKonzert narrator.

Attendees are encouraged to arrive early for additional activities starting at 1 p.m. that include games, crafts and a hands-on instrument petting zoo before the show. This family-friendly event is geared toward ages 5-12.

Tickets are $10 and available through PortTIX.com, by phone at 207-842-0800 or at the box office at 20 Myrtle St. Box office hours are noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. All ticket prices include a $2 handling fee and $2 Merrill Restoration fee.
