LEWISTON — A local man was indicted Wednesday on charges of beating another man with a baseball bat last month.

Rasaun Hampton, 37, of 12 Whipple St., was indicted on charges of aggravated assault and elevated aggravated assault. He is accused of hitting a man in the head with a baseball bat during a fight at 143 Bartlett St.

The victim was taken to Central Maine Medical Center with a gash on his head, police said. He was treated and released.

The attack was reported at about 10:30 p.m. April 3. When police arrived, they found the victim bleeding from his head. The assailant had fled but was arrested the following day, police said.

According to court records, Hampton has an extensive criminal history, including convictions for aggravated drug trafficking and assault. After his arrest in April, he was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn. He has since been released on bail.
