HANCOCK — Two people are dead after an accident on Route 1 in Hancock County late Monday night, police said.
A 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer heading northbound had started to pass another vehicle in the southbound lanes when it struck a pickup truck pulling out of a store and rolled over around 11 p.m., according to Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.
There were four occupants in the truck, one of whom was pronounced dead at the scene, the spokesman said. The other three were transported to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth.
Two were treated and released from the facility while a third occupant, who was the driver, died at the hospital, McCausland said.
The names of the victims were not released.
Hancock County Ambulance, the Hancock Fire Department and the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department assisted state police at the scene, McCausland said.
Route 1 was closed in both directions for an hour and a half while crews cleaned the scene up.
