LISBON — The Lisbon Historical Society will host two descendants of a founder of the Worumbo Mill at its meeting on Wednesday, July 10. Richard Moses of Georgia and his son, Michael Moses of Texas, are direct descendants of Oliver Moses, one of the three founders of Worumbo, established in Lisbon Falls nearly 150 years ago, in 1864.
Worumbo became a nationally famous brand, producing woolens of such quality that during World War II, the company earned a coveted “E” award from the Army and Navy Departments. The company produced countless thousands of yards of woolens to be made into Navy and Army uniforms during the war.
Worumbo made many contributions to the local community. When a Lisbon school band was formed, the company donated fabric to be made into band uniforms. When a new high school auditorium/gym was constructed, Worumbo gave stage curtains and lighting to the building.
Michael Moses will remember another noted Worumbo contribution to the community. Oliver Moses II was the treasurer of the Worumbo Mill when he formed the Worumbo Indians baseball team in the 1920s.
The Worumbo Indians were a semi-professional mill baseball team. His son, Oliver Moses III, continued to sponsor the team after he became president of the Worumbo Mill.
Richard Moses himself was a pitcher for the Indians from 1945-47. He was signed by the Boston Braves in 1947. He pitched for their farm team, the North Carolina Hi Toms, and later for the Jackson, Miss., Senators. Moses later served in the Army as an Airborne Ranger during the Korean War. An injury during a parachute jump forced him later to give up his professional baseball career.
Former workers at Worumbo, society members and guests are invited to meet the Moses family members and to share stories of the mill and its history. Refreshments will be served following the gathering. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Parking and entry to the society rooms are in the rear of the MTM Center.
