LIVERMORE FALLS — The RSU 73 Adult and Community Education program will offer new classes when it moves to the former Spruce Mountain High School here this fall.

“We’re really looking to expand the program,” Director Eileen Miazga said.

The adult education program moved from the Jay Community Center this summer because it is being renovated so all Spruce Mountain High School students will be at one location in the fall. The renovation project also includes the nearby high and middle schools.

For the summer, RSU 73 adult education classes are offered in the academic wing of the former high school in Livermore Falls. But in the fall the program will expand into the cafeteria, gym and several trades classrooms. Plans are to offer culinary, baking, woodworking and customer service certificates, along with live classes taught from Central Maine Community College and video courses offered through the University of Maine at Augusta.

Adult Basic Education, General Educational Development and diploma programs, as well as enrichment classes, will continue.

Miazga wants to develop the cafeteria into space for art shows, conferences, workshops and other community events.

“It could really come to life,” she said.

To gauge interest and support, she plans to hold a public meeting this summer to gather ideas and learn how much the community is willing to work toward the goal. She also wants to develop an advisory committee to help with the creation of a community room.

A plan is expected to be presented to the RSU 73 board in August.
