BURNHAM (AP) — A Unity College researcher hurt when the helicopter she was in crashed during an aerial search for a bear in Burnham has been released from the hospital.
George Matula, an associate professor at Unity and the bear study’s project leader, identified the woman as 27-year-old Lisa Bates, the assistant project leader.
Authorities said the pilot, a 58-year-old Bowdoinham man, remains hospitalized. His name has not been made public.
The helicopter was just above tree level on Wednesday evening when it went down.
Matula told the Morning Sentinel (http://bit.ly/11mhASu ) that Bates pulled the pilot clear from the wreckage.
She was treated for injuries at MaineGeneral Medical Center’s Thayer Campus.
Matula said Bates and the pilot were trying to find a particular bear that was wearing a tracking collar.
