Garrett Blad of North Liberty, Ind., leads a group of six Climate Summer cyclists, who are biking around Maine to bring awareness to climate change, along Washington Avenue in Auburn toward their destination for the week, the Unitarian Universalist Church in Auburn. The group will cycle for eight weeks and about 1,500 miles in New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Maine to advocate for sustainable energy. “We’re supporting the rapid and responsible transition from fossil fuels to sustainable energy,” Blad said after reaching the church Monday afternoon. “In Maine, the tar sands pipeline is the biggest threat.” The group, along with three other Climate Summer teams, will end in Barnstable, Mass., in an effort to get the Cape Wind project built. While in the Lewiston-Auburn area, the group plans to host a Climate Cafe from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Auburn Public Library, and a bike hike Wednesday, leaving the UU Church at 8 a.m. To see more about the project, visit http://climatesummer.net.
