LEWISTON — On Friday, Central Maine Healthcare removed all references to its Level II Trauma Center’s standing as a verified center, as determined by the American College of Surgeons.

Central Maine Medical Center’s trauma verification lapsed more than a year ago, but the hospital never edited its patient marketing or physician recruitment ads to reflect that.

When interviewed by the Sun Journal on Thursday about the conflict, Chuck Gill, vice president of marketing for CMHC, said the oversight would be corrected.

On Friday, the hospital removed all references to “verified” in its Web description of the Trauma Center and the physician recruitment office is in the process of removing the term from its print and online ads, according to Gill.

Gill pointed out that Maine Medical Center, the ACS verification of which has also lapsed, maintains that reference in its marketing and recruitment ads.

Maine Med’s verification lapsed earlier this year because of an administrative issue. According to a hospital spokesman, it intends to seek reverification in 2014.

CMMC’s verification expired in June 2012, but the hospital asked ACS to put off reverification when all four of its trauma surgeons, including the program’s director, left around that time. The hospital has since hired a director and is in the process of re-verification.

On Friday, it was.

According to Gill, the hospital has removed all references to “verified” from its website and its physician recruitment office is removing the term from its print and online ads.

We checked. And they did.

That’s quick work.

The hospital also pointed out that Maine Medical Center, whose ACS verification has also lapsed, maintains that reference in its marketing and recruitment ads.

It’ll be interesting to see if Maine Med makes that right as quickly as CMMC.
