Tourney to raise funds for tennis courts

LEWISTON — A fundraising tournament of women’s, men’s, and mixed doubles, starting at 8 a.m., will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 3 and 4, at the Franklin Pasture tennis courts next to Lewiston High School, 156 East Ave. All proceeds will help fund renovations to the courts. The cost to participate is $20 per person.

Interested individuals may register at the Lewiston Recreation Department, 65 Central Ave., between 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The deadline is noon on Friday, Aug. 2.

Free Reiki workshop Aug. 12

LEWISTON – The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing will offer a free Reiki workshop for anyone interested in learning more about this stress relieving practice. The session will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug., at the Dempsey Center, 29 Lowell St.

Dempsey Center Reiki Coordinator Meredith Kendall, RN, MSN, will discuss this gentle, hands-on technique intended to relieve stress and discomfort. Reiki is one of the integrative medicine services provided by the Dempsey Center which complement the medical treatments prescribed by a physician.

Construction course offered Aug. 21

AUBURN — The Corporate and Community Services Department of Central Maine Community College will offer a new course, “Introduction To Building Science,” on Thursday evenings starting Sept. 5. Deadline for registration is Aug. 21.

This course is open to the public and no prior knowledge of building construction is necessary.

First-time home buyers, homeowners and builders will benefit by learning how residential building and renovation projects are affected by physics, gravity, wind, seismic loads, moisture movement and air flow.

Instructor David Johnston is a trainer for Maine Indoor Air Quality Council. The United States Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification process will be discussed, as well as the Maine Uniform Building and Energy Code.

This course runs Thursdays from Sept. 5 through Dec. 19 from 6 to 8:55 p.m. Registration for this course is open and ongoing; however space is limited. The cost for the course is $363.60 and includes tuition, fees and all materials.

Boucher Memorial Run is Sept. 15

AUBURN — The seventh annual Bob Boucher Memorial 5 K Run/Walk will take place at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15, at Saint Dominic Academy.

Boucher was the long-time teacher, coach and athletic director at Saint Dom’s and had a spectacular 25-year career as the St. Dom’s hockey coach, capturing five state titles. He was voted Coach of the Year five times, and also coached the varsity soccer team for 16 years.

He was inducted into the Lewiston-Auburn Sports Hall of Fame in 2006 and inducted posthumously into the St. Dom’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008, receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award for his dedication to the athletic program while at St. Dom’s.

The race was started in Boucher’s memory and keep his legacy of supporting athletics alive. To register in advance, at a cost of $20, contact the alumni/development office at 782-6911, ext. 2109; registrations will be accepted the day of the race for $25. Cash prizes will be awarded.
