WINTHROP — The 26th annual Winthrop Sidewalk Art Festival will be held rain or shine from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, in downtown Winthrop. Sponsored by the Winthrop Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce, the event is known as one of the best art festivals in Maine, and features many high-quality artists and draws attendees from throughout the region. Creations by artists who work in a variety of media including fabric, leather, metal, oils, watercolors, wood, and pottery will be featured.
The theme of this year’s festival is “A Celebration of Winthrop” and the artists’ exhibits will be complemented by many other special activities including a concert, fundraisers, and church bake sales and luncheons. In addition to viewing and purchasing the art on display, attendees have the opportunity to take advantage of these special activities, as well as numerous discounts and specials offered by local merchants.
9 a.m.-noon Your Maine Stamper will host its annual “Crafters’ Yard Sale” featuring tables with craft supplies and tools and one-of-a-kind creations for sale.
9 a.m.-1 p.m. The Winthrop Farmers’ Market will be held in the Winthrop Town Office parking lot. In addition to the usual farm vendors, crafts vendors will participate.
9 a.m.-2 p.m. The Winthrop Congregational Church will hold its annual “Luncheon on the Lawn” and bake sale. Lots of baked goodies and RADA cutlery will be on sale. The luncheon begins at 11 a.m. with a menu that includes lobster salad and chicken salad rolls. All proceeds will benefit the missions of the church.
10 a.m.-noon A bike safety rodeo at the Winthrop Grade School parking lot. Grade school-age bicyclists can have their bikes and helmets checked for safety and practice their biking skills on an obstacle course. Snacks and drawing for “I Play Outside” T-shirt and other prizes. Sponsored by the Winthrop Recreation Committee and the Maine Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Coalition.
2-4 p.m. A free concert at Norcross Point featuring the unique, high-energy bluegrass sounds of the Muddy Marsh Ramblers.
4:30 to 7:30 p.m The 2nd annual Family Barbecue & Gumbo Festival to End Hunger hosted by the Rotary Club of the Winthrop Area at the football field behind the police station. Pig roast, spareribs, chicken and sausage gumbo, collard greens, and all the fixings. Vegetarian and gluten-free foods, too. Fun for the entire family. Tickets are $10 per person and $30 per family. Proceeds to benefit the Winthrop Food Pantry, Winthrop Hot Meal Kitchen, and other charities.
