New Auburn Seniors meet Aug. 7

AUBURN — The New Auburn Seniors continue to meet at St. Louis Church.

The regular monthly meeting will be held at noon Wednesday, Aug. 7, followed by light lunch and bingo.

Open bingo will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Aug. 14 and 28. All seniors are welcome.

The Tot Lot picnic will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, at Pettengill Park. Cost is $5. Menu is doughnuts and coffee for breakfast and a lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob, potato salad, dessert and drinks. Bingo will be played.

Parenting, cooking classes at Ark

LEWISTON — A free parenting class, “Creating Healthy Happy Families” with Kim Mazone, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5, at The Ark, 791 Lisbon St.

At the same location, a free vegan cooking class will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7. Nutritionalist Cheryl Farley will demonstrate more of her delicious recipes on plant-based cooking.

Stewart-Reed family reunion

HEBRON — The descendants of Mary Elizabeth Stewart and Charles Franklin Reed will hold their annual reunion on Sunday, Aug. 11, at the home of Rich and Jane Hatch.

Arrival time is before noon with a potluck lunch at noon. After lunch the annual business meeting will take place along with the traditional egg toss, pie eating contest and other games.

Baseball films at Auburn Library

AUBURN — The Auburn Public Library continues its summer film series with a doubleheader of baseball films.

On Aug. 13 at 1:30, the first film of the series will be “42 – The Jackie Robinson Story.” Directed by Brian Helgeland, “42” tells the life story of Jackie Robinson and his history-making signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers under the guidance of team executive Branch Rickey. More than a baseball movie, the action and social issues will grab the attention of all viewers.

On Aug. 20 at 1:30, the last film of the baseball-themed doubleheader will be a classic. “In The Natural,” starring Robert Redford, Robert Duvall and Glenn Close, tells the story of an average baseball player who comes out of seemingly nowhere to become a legendary player with almost divine talent.

Garden Club: Soil problems

MONMOUTH — Caragh Fitzgerald of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Service will speak to the Monmouth Garden Club at 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, at the A Rise and Shine Bed and Breakfast on Route 135.

Her topic will be “Get the Dirt on Soils — Managing Common Soil Problems in the Garden.” Too much clay in your garden soil? Poor drainage? Other problems you think are caused by the soil? She will explain about some of these problems and what to do to fix them or at least make them better. The public is invited.

Climate change to be topic

DURHAM — On Saturday, Aug. 17, at 7 p.m., Kerry Emanuel will speak at Durham Friend’s Meetinghouse, 534 Quaker Meetinghouse Road, on the scientific causes of climate change and what that means to the world, including the frequency and severity of hurricanes.

Emanuel will also discuss ways that may counter or otherwise address climate change. Emanuel, a highly regarded professor of atmospheric science at MIT, is recognized as a world expert in hurricanes and in 2006 was recognized by Times Magazine as one of the world’s most influential scientists.

Admission is free; donations accepted.

Natural History Club flower show

TURNER — The Turner Natural History Club and Museum will hold its annual flower show and community information day on Saturday, Aug. 17.

The flower show has three judged classes: cup and saucer, miniatures, and container of your choice. All entries must contain only wildflowers.

Entries must be in place by 11 a.m. Judging will be at 11:30 a.m. Ribbons will be awarded.

A presentation of the MPBN film “Sustainable Maine: Saving Our Lakes” will take place at 1 p.m., followed by questions and answers with a Colby College researcher from the Belgrade Lakes project.

The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
