AUGUSTA — A group opposed to new educational standards is launching a campaign to repeal the standards through a statewide vote.
No Common Core Maine and the Maine Equal Rights Center say they will soon submit a proposal to the state for a ballot measure to repeal the Common Core Standards. They would need to collect more than 57,000 signatures before it would go before voters in November 2014.
Maine adopted the standards in 2011 and schools are beginning to implement them this year. They’ve been adopted by 45 states.
The standards are designed to provide clear, rigorous goals for teachers and allow for comparison among states. But opponents say they strip control away from local school boards and parents and will lead to a federal takeover of the educational system.
