SKOWHEGAN (AP) — No one was seriously injured and the supply of ice cream to overheated New Englanders was barely interrupted by a small fire at one of the region’s most famous ice cream manufacturers.

The Skowhegan Fire Department responded to a fire at the Gifford’s Famous Ice Cream factory building just after noon Tuesday.

Capt. Mike Savage told the Morning Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1508dKp ) the blaze was sparked by a saw being used to renovate the roof.

Sparks from the saw set fire to debris in the attic.

Savage said Gifford’s employees helped control the flames with a garden hose in the building until fire crews arrived.

One Gifford’s employee was checked for smoke inhalation and one firefighter was checked for dehydration. The factory shop was closed for about an hour.
