LEWISTON — As Friday’s nomination deadline approaches, nearly half of the seats open on this November’s city ballot still have no confirmed candidates.

So far, seats for City Council Wards 1, 4, 5, 6 and 7 have candidates who have collected enough valid signatures to guarantee a spot on the ballot.

Two mayoral candidates, incumbent Mayor Robert Macdonald and former Mayor Larry Gilbert, have met the nomination threshold and guaranteed their spots on the ballot.

But only two seats on the School Committee have guaranteed candidates on the ballot — incumbent Zam Zam Mohamud for the at-large seat and incumbent Jim Handy for the Ward 4 seat.

In Ward 5, no candidates have stepped forward to try for a spot on the ballot.

Nominations for seats on the City Council and the School Committee officially close as of 4:30 p.m. Sept. 6.

The election is scheduled for Nov. 5. The terms for the newly elected begin in January 2014.

Nominating petitions are available at the City Clerk’s office in City Hall. All seats for the City Councils and School Committees are open.

That includes the mayor, councilors for all seven wards, School Committee members for all seven wards and the at-large School Committee seat.

Candidates for mayor need to gather between 100 and 200 signatures from registered voters in the city.

Candidates for City Council or School Committee must gather at least 50 signatures. For all city councilors or School Committee members from a particular ward, signatures must come from registered voters from their ward. At-large School Committee candidates can gather signatures from any registered voter in the city.
