PORTLAND — A Coast Guard crewman said that four people aboard a boat that caught fire Sunday afternoon at the entrance to Portland Harbor were lucky that a Good Samaritan boater was nearby.
No injuries have been reported in the fire, which took place at about 12:30 p.m. Petty Officer Cody Seevers of Coast Guard Sector Northern New England said later Sunday afternoon that the 39-foot Sea Ray power yacht caught fire close to the Portland Head Light for reasons that were still undetermined.
“Four people aboard abandoned ship,” he said. “Luckily, there was a Good Samaritan close by who recovered the people from the water.”
He said he did not have the names and ages of the boaters on the burning boat.
The Coast Guard responded to the scene along with the Portland Fire Department, which extinguished the fire using a fire boat. Sea Tow, a commercial salvage company, towed the vessel to Spring Point Marina in South Portland, the same place the boaters were brought.
Seever said that the Maine Marine Patrol will investigate the fire.
