LIVERMORE FALLS — Selectmen on Tuesday voted to approve a special amusement permit for the Apple Pumpkin Festival to be held on Sept. 28 at the town Recreation Field.

The board waived the $25 permit fee and agreed to close Foundry Road to one-way traffic for the event. Traffic will enter behind the Municipal Building and exit onto Park Street, also known as Route 133, in Shuy Corner.

The annual festival is sponsored by the Jay, Livermore and Livermore Falls Chamber of Commerce. It had to be canceled last year due to rain.

There will be crafts, vendors, music and food, Town Manager Kristal Flagg said.

The board also opened four bids from dealerships for cruisers. Each dealership offered different packages for a sport utility police package.

The board tabled action on the bids to let police Chief Ernest Steward Jr. review them before a decision is made to buy a cruiser.

Quirk Ford of Augusta bid $31,000 but knocked it down to $26,888. It will not be known why until Steward reviews the bids, Board of Selectmen Chairman Bill Demaray said.

Farmington Ford of Farmington bid $29,039, Bailey Brothers Inc. of Livermore Falls bid $27,410 and New Castle Chrysler Dodge of New Castle bid $26,490 with no spotlight.

There is no trade-in.

Demaray said in the past that the town gets more money to sell older cruisers outright than for trade-ins. The cruiser to be traded will be a Ford Crown Victoria, Steward said.

“If we’re comparing apples to apples, I prefer to shop in town, if (the bids) are not too far apart,” Selectman Louise Chabot said.

It makes a difference in service, Selectman Jim Collins said, referring to not having to travel far to have a vehicle checked or repaired.
