MOUNT DESERT ISLAND — The Coast Guard says it has searched 1,800 square miles of ocean, but has yet to come across any vessels in trouble or debris following a distress call that reported a 55-foot fishing boat was taking on water off the Maine coast.

The Coast Guard said it received a distress call at 6:40 p.m. Sunday reporting two people were on board the boat about nine miles northeast of Mount Desert Rock, a small island about 20 miles off Mount Desert Island.

Chief Petty Officer Matt Burt said a Coast Guard aircraft and two vessels were continuing to search Monday afternoon. He said that a read on the distress radio signal suggested it came from Mount Desert Island or nearby waters, not from miles offshore like the caller said.
