1930 – 2013

SANDY RIVER PLANTATION — William “Bunk” E. Spiller, 82, of Sandy River Plantation, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, Sept. 13, with his family by his side.

He was born in Rangeley on Sept. 17, 1930, son of Harold H. Spiller, Sr. and Evelyn Estell (Overton) Spiller. He attended school in Rangeley. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1948 to 1953 as an electrician on the USS Larson destroyer.

After serving his country, Bunk worked for Bill Ferguson in the sawmill and driving truck. In 1957, he went to work for D.C. Morton as an equipment operator, truck driver and mechanic. From 1963 to 1987, he worked for the Navy Survival School, SERE, then worked again at D.C. Morton for more than 20 years.

On June 11, 1965, Bunk married Claire A. Champoux and raised her three children, Ken, Robyn and Rick, as well as their daughter, Susan. Bunk was a member of the American Legion Post 120 in Rangeley.

He loved country music and took great pride in his gardening. Many nights around the kitchen table, he enjoyed playing cribbage with family and friends. Bunk was a most generous man and loved by all.

He is survived by his children; his brother, Harold Spiller Jr. and wife, Gertrude; his two sisters, Alice Richardson, and Tink Dunham and husband, Bill; six grandchildren, Marina, Emily, Sarah, Chelsea, Jared and Nick; one great-granddaughter, Alivia; five nieces, Debbie, Karen, Jennifer, Ginny and Barbara; and three nephews, Dean, Paul and Kent.

He was predeceased by his wife, Claire, in 1987.
