FARMINGTON — A phone scam to get people to wire money to get a relative out of jail has made a recent resurgence in the area, according to the Farmington Police Department.

The department has received complaints from several residents to got such calls, Farmington Detective Marc Bowering said.

During the call, which often has a bad connection, the caller says they are the victim’s relative and are in jail in Canada. They need the victim to wire money for their bail or attorney fees, Bowering said.

“Often the caller knows the victim’s relative that they are pretending to be,” he said in a news release.

The department wants local residents to be aware of the apparent resurgence of this scam.

For questions about this or any other suspected scam, residents can contact the Farmington Police Department at 778-6311, he said.
