The Maine Sports Legends will honor 10 individuals as inductees into the Hall of Honors on Sunday, Oct. 13 at Alfond Youth Center in Waterville. The inductees include Ben Paradis, Murray Putnam, Kathleeen Mazzuchelli, Mike Thurson, Carroll Conley Sr. (posthumous), Randy Huard, Paul McClay, Dr. John Winkin, Paul Zdanowicz and Richard Labonte.
These individuals were chosen for their accomplishments and contributions to Maine’s youth and sports programs.
Eight scholar athletes will receive cash awards for their accomplishments. This year’s recipients include: Nicholas Lunn, Hodgdon High School; Carla Halvorson, Easton High School; Casey Jordan, Dexter Regional High School; Jordyn Bell, Dexter; Gabe Smith, Winslow High School; Alyssa Andrews, Oxford Hills High School; Connor McCrum, Thorton Academy; and Elizabeth Walfield, Morse High School.
Andrews, who is attending Colby College, graduated second in her class of 237 at Oxford Hills with a grade point average of 3.968. She is the daughter of Jeffrey and Robert Andrews. The family resides in Norway. A member of the National Honor Society, she participated in skiing, soccer and track and was elected captain of both the Nordic skiing and soccer teams her senior year. She won the Viking Award for soccer and skiing was named to the KVAC First Team All-Academic Award for soccer and skiing. She participated in the orchestra and jazz bands and received the Director’s Award for excellence in orchestra and was president of the 4 H Club. She worked as a camp counselor for three years and volunteered with the Harvest Hills Animal Center. She also volunteered at Robert’s Farm where she helped clear ski trails, raising the warming hut, waxing skis and teaching children to ski. She was also a participant in American Legion Girls’ State.
The banquet will begin at 12:30 p.m., which follows a social half hour which begins at noon. Tickets are $35 at reserved tables of eight and can be obtained by calling Maine Sports Legends at 622-1539 or by email to [email protected].
Co-ed Children’s Flag Football to be offered by Lewiston FLY Football
Lewiston FLY Football will offer a four-week session of Co-ed Flag Football instruction for youth ages 4 to 6 years old. Practice will begin Sunday Sept. 30 and continue on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. until Oct.19. Participants will learn the fundamentals of Flag Football while learning the importance of sportsmanship and physical fitness in a supervised setting.
The session will be taught by coach Mike Jordan. Jordan has over 25 years of coaching experience. He has coached for several years for the Lewiston FLY Football League, Auburn Rec also runs a football conditioning program at the Boys and Girls Club in Auburn every winter.
