PORTLAND (AP) — Thousands of people are running in this year’s Maine Marathon.

Sunday’s 26.2-mile race goes from Portland to Yarmouth and back. Organizers say about 3,500 people entered to run either the marathon or half-marathon.

Both races began at 7:45 a.m.

Twenty-seven-year-old Dan Vassallo of Peabody, Mass. won last year’s marathon in 2 hours, 21 minutes, 12 seconds, breaking the previous record set in 2007.
