ALFRED (AP) — A Romanian student who was run over by a school bus while riding a bicycle has been awarded $750,000 by a Maine jury.

Monica Semian’s pelvis was crushed by the rear wheels of the bus after she was knocked off her bike in Ogunquit in September 2010, when she was living with a group of other Romanian students in Wells.

She sued the driver and the company, Ledgemere Transportation, which does contract work for the Wells-Ogunquit Community School District. The lawsuit sought damages for injuries, medical expenses and suffering.

The Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/GJ817m ) said the jury initially proposed a $1 million judgment but reduced it to reflect Semian’s partial responsibility. A lawyer for the bus company didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment.
