HARRISON — The search was on Wednesday night for a suspect who robbed Northeast Bank and assaulted a customer before making a getaway.

Police said it happened shortly before 4 p.m. when a lone suspect walked into the bank at 46 Main St. and demanded money. The person got away with an undisclosed amount of money.

Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department officials said the suspect did not brandish or threaten to use a weapon, although a customer was assaulted during the heist. The customer was not seriously injured, police said. They did not elaborate on the nature of the assault.

When the robbery was reported, a nearby Maine State Police trooper heard the call being dispatched and rushed to the bank. The trooper was on scene within minutes, police said, followed by a sheriff’s deputy who secured the bank.

Bank employees and customers who were in the building at the time provided police with a description of the suspect as well as a plate number and a description of a vehicle believed to have been involved.

The Sheriff’s Department was continuing to investigate the robbery Wednesday night.
