HAMPDEN — The body of a middle-age woman was recovered from the Penobscot River Monday morning, according to police.

Two kayakers discovered the body early Monday morning.

The body was placed in a funeral home vehicle near a house at 64 Cottage St. and was transported to Augusta, where it will be examined by the Maine medical examiner’s office.

Police did not release the woman’s identity.

Multiple police vehicles and an ambulance went to the house near the Penobscot River. State police detectives arrived around 11 a.m.

Yellow caution tape was placed on the property.
