1927 – 2013

FARMINGTON — On Saturday, Oct. 26, Heaven received another angel when David H. Mayo, 86, of Wilton, passed away at the Sandy River Center for Health Care, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on July 7, 1927, in Arlington, Mass., and went on to serve his country in World War II and Korea. When he returned from the service, he received his high school diploma and two college degrees, and married the love of his life, Caroline Douglas, on June 7, 1947, at East Wilton Church. They had three children: Camilla, Douglas and Cathy.

David was a tutor and taught math at Academy Hill School in Wilton. He was a big advocate for children with disabilities. He was a longtime member of the American Legion in Old Orchard Beach.

He enjoyed gardening — especially his flowers, family gatherings and especially time spent with his grandchildren. He loved to make people laugh and one couldn’t help but laugh with him. He will be deeply missed.

David is survived by his wife of 66 years, Caroline Mayo of Wilton; a loving daughter, Camilla Jordan of West Farmington; son, Douglas Mayo and his wife, Linda, of New Jersey; daughter, Cathy Melvin and her husband, Mike, of Madison; a loving granddaughter, Faith Michaud and her husband, Johnny, of Wilton; granddaughter, Charity Jordan of West Farmington; granddaughter, Kristin Gordon and her husband, Brad, of Livermore; granddaughter, Beth Hardy of Strong; great-granddaughter, Cheryl; great-grandsons, Tyrell Michaud and Zachary Smith; great-great-grandchildren, Madison, Dakota, Breanne, Sara and Izabelle; and many other family members.

He was predeceased by his biological parents, David H. Marston and Anthea Crosby; and his adoptive father, Harold Mayo.

David’s family wishes to thank the staff of Sandy River, Beacon Hospice and the Trasks, Valerie and Travis, for all they have done.

Words of condolence and tribute may be shared with David’s family at www.wilesrc.com.
