LEWISTON — Madaktari I Kenya held its annual board meeting Sept. 30. Board members include Dr. Stephen Sokol, president; Gerda Neu-Sokol, treasurer; Anne Kemper, secretary; and members Paul Murphy and Thomas Tracy.

A resident of Maine since 1970, Sokol has been featured numerous times in the Sun Journal for his volunteer work around the globe. He has spent considerable time in Africa and other developing nations working for Doctors without Borders, the International Rescue Committee and the International Medical Corps in refugee camps in Darfur, Kosovo, Sierra Leone and other countries.

Madaktari I Kenya is the non-governmental organization he founded in December 2011 that supports a group of Kenyan orphans and his medical work in Kenya.

Accomplishments for this past year include the support of 15 young men, partnership with a Kenyan community organization, confirmation of 501(c)(3) status and the appointment of Barbara McAllister of Auburn as managing director.

Sokol will return to Kenya in November.
