WINTHROP — The Winthrop Area People for Peace and the Maine Chapter of Veterans for Peace will hold a community ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, to dedicate a granite peace pole and bench in memory of the late Tom Sturtevant, a Korean war veteran, former Cony High School teacher and long-time resident and activist of Winthrop.

Tom and Mary Sturtevant helped start the Inch-by-Inch Garden at Main and Highland streets in 2009. Tom helped found the organization Veterans for Peace and the Maine chapter is now named in his honor.

The public event, coordinated by Karen Richards Toothaker, will begin at 1 p.m. in the Inch-by-Inch Garden. Kristen McLaren will conduct the Light Choir of the Winthrop United Methodist Church for a short community sing-along.

Doug Rawlings of Veterans for Peace and Craig Hickman, an organic farmer and the state representative for Winthrop and Readfield, will deliver brief remarks.

Ben Sturtevant and Susannah Sturtevant Sanfillipo will close the program with their father’s bass drum.

Refreshments and music will follow the program. Stan Keach will provide music. He taught for many years at the Maranacook Community School and plays with the Maranacook String Band and in the duo Stan & Dan.

Jon Jennings created the Peace Pole and bench with granite from the Sturtevant family garden in Winthrop. Maine Veterans for Peace and the Winthrop Area People for Peace have underwritten the costs of the project.

Additional funds raised and food donations will be given to the Winthrop Food Pantry, a project Tom supported for years as a volunteer and board member. Bring nonperishable food items to the celebration for donation to the Winthrop Food Pantry.
