Bill Legere of Auburn, left, a nurse practitioner at Central Maine Medical Center, is presented the Cherokee Inspired Comfort Award by Lanny Oliver, M.D., medical director of the CMMC Emergency Department. Legere has earned national recognition for his work on behalf of at-risk women and children, especially victims of child abuse, domestic violence and human trafficking. He is among six care providers across the country “recognized for their impact on the lives of others through extraordinary patient care, sacrifice and innovation while serving as an inspiration to others.” He was selected for the award in the Advanced Practice Nurse category. During the past several years, Legere has worked internationally to bring attention to a range of human rights issues affecting women and children. He has organized high-visibility educational events on subjects such as human trafficking, while staying as much as possible out of the spotlight. His advocacy work has taken him to Europe and Africa.
