LEWISTON — Let’s Go! 5-2-1-0, a nationally recognized childhood obesity prevention program of the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center, has recognized 210 school, after-school and childcare programs across Maine for supporting children and families in healthy eating and active living.

The recognition was given to those organizations and programs that follow five strategies for childhood obesity prevention. In addition, 69 health care practices in Maine were recognized for taking on three components of becoming a Let’s Go! health care site.

In Androscoggin County, Let’s Go! is coordinated by Healthy Androscoggin. Locally, 14 school, after-school and childcare sites were recognized, along with three health care sites.

The school sites participating in the program are: Durham Elementary School, Martel Elementary School in Lewiston, Washburn Elementary School in Auburn.

Afterschool programs include Community Concepts Big Brothers Big Sisters in Lewiston, St. Mary’s Nutrition Center in Lewiston, Tree Street Youth in Lewiston, Auburn 21st Century Community Learning Center at Washburn Elementary School, Park Avenue Elementary School and East Auburn Community School and YWCA of Central Maine.

Participating child care programs are YWCA of Central Maine in Lewiston, Toddle Inn Childcare in Auburn, Whatever Is Clever Family Child Care in Auburn and Androscoggin Early Head Start at Webster Street in Auburn.

The three health care sites are DFD Russell Medical Center of Leeds, Monmouth and Turner.

5-2-1-0 stands for: 5 or more fruits and vegetables, 2 hours or less recreational screen time, 1 hour or more of physical activity and 0 sugary drinks, more water and lowfat milk each day.

Let’s Go! works in six different settings to reach families where they live, learn, work and play to reinforce the importance of healthy living.
