1926 – 2013

LEWISTON — Rosamond Platt Porell, 87, of Lewiston and formerly of Poland Spring and Portland, died Thursday, Nov. 28, at Central Maine Medical Center. She was the wife of the late Arthur John Porell.

She was born in Stratford, N.H., on Oct. 22, 1926, the daughter of the late Frank Platt and Ida Cable Platt. She attended Deering High School in Portland and received her registered nurse certification from the Maine Eye and Ear Infirmary in Portland. She married Arthur Porell in Portland on Sept. 5, 1949.

Rosamond and Arthur moved from Portland to Poland Spring in 1973, at which time they built a new home that took 10 years for them to complete. Subsequent to Arthur’s death in 2009, Rosamond moved to an apartment in Lewiston. Rosamond, known to family and friends as Roddy, worked as a registered nurse at several nursing homes and other longterm care facilities in the greater Portland and greater Lewiston-Auburn areas, until her retirement in 1997.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). She was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church while in Portland and at St. Gregory’s Church, after moving to Poland Spring. Rosamond was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to her family and her greatest joy was spending the majority of her time with them. Besides her family, Rosamond enjoyed nature and loved to walk outside or take a drive through the countryside. She was also an avid reader and was diligent in keeping up with local and national politics.

She is survived by her two sons, David J. Porell and his wife, Marilyn, of Bridgewater, Mass., and Stephen P. Porell and his wife, Pauline, of Lewiston; as well as four grandchildren, Emily (Porell) Nadeau, Mark Porell, Monica (Porell) Slote and Joshua Maker; and two great-grandchildren, Charlotte Slote and Grace Nadeau. She also leaves a nephew, Donald Penta, of North Windham; and a niece, Betty Lerman, of Bedford, Mass.
