PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — A Whole Foods Market will be the centerpiece for a development project in the city’s North End.

HarborCorp LCC submitted its plans to develop the corner of Market and Russell streets to the city for preliminary design review.

HarborCorp Principal Chris Thompson is also a principal in Lincoln Street Hoteliers, developers of Lewiston, Maine’s newest hotel, a Hampton Inn being constructed on Lincoln Street. Work on the $12 million, 93-room hotel is scheduled to wrap up in September 2014.

The group’s North End development will feature a Whole Foods Market, a 658-space parking garage, an event center and 14 residential condominiums. It will be across from the Portsmouth Sheraton, which is operated by the group.

“The city desires additional public parking; an organic and sustainable shopping option; and community meeting space and we are happy to offer these to the community,” Thompson said in a press release. “We hope (the) project will serve as landmark space for the North End for the next three decades and more as the Sheraton has been for the city.”

HarborCorp’s plan is to complete construction in 2016.
