A story and a half house, shed and stable located on the North River Road, owned by George W. Cobb of Winter street and occupied by Charles Rice and family, were practically destroyed by fire yesterday. An alarm was sounded from the engine house Box 91, shortly before noon, but the fire was well under way and before the long haul had been completed, there was little left of the buildings. Mr. Rice, his son and his wife were not at home. The fire which started from some unknown cause, was discovered by Mrs. H. A. Bigelow. When she went to her telephone to spread the alarm, she found the line out of order, which caused considerable delay in getting help to fight the flames. About this time, however, W. R. Noyes of Auburn happened along in his automobile and Mrs. Bigelow was driven to the Lowell farm, where a “live” telephone was found.

Santa arrives in Auburn tonight, and with that comes the annual holiday parade and tree-lighting ceremony, according to Ed Spooner of the Holiday Decorating Committee. A parade, led by the Edward Little High School Band, will leave the Auburn City Building at approximately 6:30 p.m., travel down Spring Street to Court Street, and move north to Great Falls Plaza. Santa and Mrs. Claus will ride in an open limousine, provided by Jeff’s Exxon, while members of the Auburn Fire Department round out the parade detail. The tree-lighting ceremony and a concert of Christmas music by the Auburn Community Band, directed by Milt Simon, will follow.
