YWCA offers drop-in child care

LEWISTON — Do you have holiday shopping to do, but can’t find a time to do it without your child(ren)? The YWCA of Central Maine is offering drop-in care so that parents may shop, run errands or go to appointments knowing that their child will be safe and happy.

Children will experience a preschool environment that includes play, art, music, outside play and even swimming provided by trained staff. This program is offered from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday for children ages 2 1/2 to 5.

Weston A. Price Chapter meeting

AUBURN — Weston A. Price Chapter meeting will be held from 6  to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, at the Auburn Library in the Androscoggin Room on the bottom floor.

The discussion will be tips that will help people transition easily to a nutrient-dense food and won’t break their budget.

Immigration officers at library

LEWISTON — Immigration officers from DHS will be at the Lewiston Public Library from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, offering free one-on-one consultations and assistance to anyone who drops in.

The officers will be available in the library’s second-floor conference rooms.

Free vegan cooking class

LEWISTON — The Ark, 791 Lisbon St., will offer a free vegan cooking class with Julie Penner, nutritionist, at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11.

La Leche League meets Dec. 12

AUBURN — The next meeting of the La Leche League will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, at 102 Bennett Ave. This is a change from the usual Wednesday meeting date.

The group offers breastfeeding information and encouragement to pregnant women, new mothers and growing families. Services offered include monthly meetings and 24-hour telephone help. All interested women are invited. Babies are always welcome.

All concerns about breastfeeding are welcome for discussion in addition to the scheduled topic, “Breastfeeding, the Mother-Baby Relationship and the Weaning Process.”

The discussion will include nutrition for nursing mothers, introducing solids to baby and the weaning breastfed baby.

USDA Local Working Group

LEWISTON — The Androscoggin Valley Soil and Water Conservation District will host a meeting of the Androscoggin and Sagadahoc Counties USDA Local Working Group from 9:30 a.m. to noon Thursday, Dec. 19, at the USDA Service Center, 254 Goddard Road.

Local Working Groups assist the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service in matters relating to the implementation and technical aspects of conservation programs under Title II of the Food, Conservation and Energy Act (Farm Bill).

Creative Writing students’ reading

FARMINGTON — UMF student writers in Maine’s only Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program will read from their original work at the University of Maine at Farmington fall 2013 Creative Writing Senior Reading. This free and open-to-the-public reading will take place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, in The Landing in the UMF Olsen Student Center.

Held twice a year, this event features graduating seniors reading from their portfolio of original works in poetry, fiction and nonfiction. Participating students include Alex Beloin, from Camden; Mary Drover, Peabody, Mass.; Nicole Ellis, Litchfield; Melanie Floyd, Long Island; Zach Fowler, Presque Isle; Sean Igoe, New Haven, Conn.; Jamie Phillips, Willington, Conn.; Hunter Rowell, West Paris; Ashley Smith, Brunswick; and Meagan Winker, Cape Elizabeth, all of whom have just completed the Senior Seminar in Creative Writing.

CMMC WHA plans bake sale

LEWISTON — The Central Maine Medical Center Woman’s Hospital Association will hold a bake sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, in the CMMC Main Lobby at 60 High St.

Funds raised at the bake sale will be used by CMMC’s Sam and Jennie Bennett Breast Care Center to pay for screening mammograms for patients who do not have insurance or do not have insurance coverage that covers the cost of testing.

Anyone who cannot attend the bake sale but would like to contribute to the fund-raising effort is urged to send a donation, by mailing a check to the Woman’s Hospital Association, CMMC, 300 Main St., Lewiston, Maine, 04240.

Dickens group to meet Dec. 14

AUBURN — The Pickwick Club, Maine’s Dickens reading and discussion group, will meet from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at the Auburn Public Library.

The group will be discussing and discovering Dickens’ Christmas stories, including but not limited to “A Christmas Carol.”

Winter Outings Skills workshop

BRUNSWICK — The Maine Chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club will host a free Winter Outings Skills workshop on Saturday, Dec. 14, at Curtis Memorial Library, 23 Pleasant St.

AMC Maine Chapter leaders Peter Broderick and Laura Flight will discuss clothing, gear, snow travel and other essential knowledge and techniques. Saturday morning will be indoor instruction, followed by a potluck lunch, then an optional short outdoor session.

This event is intended as an introduction course for experienced three-season hikers and a refresher for experienced winter adventurers. Although the focus of the workshop is on hiking in the winter, many of the topics apply to any outdoor winter outing.

Bean, casserole supper is Dec. 14

LEWISTON — A bean and casserole supper will be held from 4:45 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at Calvary United Methodist Church, 59 Sabattus St. Use the Bartlett Street entrance.

Menu will include casseroles, salads, beans, hot biscuits and homemade pies. Cost is $7 for adults, $3 for children.

Free yoga class offers relaxation

LEWISTON — HealthSteps will host a free Yoga Flow class from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, in the Lepage Large Conference Room at 99 Campus Ave. The instructor is Tisha Bremner.

In exchange for the class, donations to the St. Mary’s Food Pantry would be welcomed and appreciated. This mixed-level flow class is open to new and experienced students.

All proceeds benefit the St. Mary’s food pantry, which has been providing emergency food assistance to residents of the greater Lewiston/Auburn area for more than 20 years. The St. Mary’s Food Pantry relies solely on charitable donations.

Library bake sale, book sale, boutique

WAYNE — The first Friends of the Library Sweet & Savory Holiday Bake Sale, Book Sale & Boutique will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at the Williams House, 14 Old Winthrop Road.

Stock up on homemade Christmas cookies, pies, stollen, candy, truffles, pecans, cheese straws, jams and more. The boutique will feature gently used Christmas ornaments and decorations, stocking stuffers and gifts; all donations from members and supporters.

The book sale will be open, too, and will include Christmas books that the group has been setting aside all year.

All proceeds benefit the Cary Memorial Library.

Knights offer Sunday movies

LEWISTON — On Sunday, Dec. 15, the Holy Cross Knights of Columbus will feature two family movies, “The Greatest Miracle” and “The Miracle of Marcelino.”

“The Greatest Miracle” takes you on a journey of faith as three souls are shown the love and compassion of the Lord and the Mother Mary. All three will find their eyes opened and their faith renewed as they are appointed their very own guardian angels.

“The Miracle of Marcelino” is about an infant orphan boy left at the doorsteps of the monastery. He was well cared for, but lonely and missed his mother. One day he found a friend in a forbidden attic, hanging on a cross, a friend who would repay Marcelino’s kindness by granting him one heart-felt wish.

The showing will begin at 1 p.m. with a short intermission between the two movies. A concession will be available. Everyone is welcome. There is no charge.

Christian Skate Night is Dec. 15

TOPSHAM — Christian Skate Night sponsored by Grace Community Chapel in West Gardiner will be held from 5:45 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, at Topsham Roller World, 20 Atwood Drive.

Cost of $5 includes regular skates; in-line skates are $2 extra.

KPOP dance classes for teens

AUBURN — KPOP dance classes will begin in January at the Auburn Public Library, 49 Spring St.

KPOP dance is a fusion of different dance styles, ranging from hip hop to popping, from break dancing to stomping, from girl style to contemporary, new style, jazz and even ballet.

The dance classes will be led by a few local teens and will meet weekly at the library. The program is for ages 12-18.
