Talk about time being man’s greatest adversary.

Twenty nine seconds. That’s how much time the Portland Pirates were away from taking all six points against Atlantic divisional rivals, the Providence Bruins this week.

Bobby Robins’ goal for Providence tied the game up at three and the Bruins picked up the 4-3 win in a shootout Friday night at the Dunkin Donuts Center Friday night.

Joe Morrow, who was acquired in the Tyler Seguin trade by Boston in the summer, picked up one assist and Ben Youds picked up the other assist on Robins’ goal.

“If you would have told me we would take five out of six points against them at the start of the week, I would have said, ‘where can I sign up for that?,’” Portland Pirates head coach Ray Edwards said.

The Pirates struck first when Chris Brown potted his fifth goal of the season 2:48 into the contest. The lone assist went to Darian Dziurzynski.

Andrew Cherniwchan, a call up from the South Carolina Stingray of the ECHL for Providence, tied the game up at one with his first career AHL goal.

The goal came at the 9:14 mark of the opening period which was set up by Alexander Fallstrom and Mike Moore.

Portland took advantage of their first power play of the contest when Daine Todd scored his second goal of the week against the Baby B’s to give the Pirates the 2-1 lead with 6:19 remaining in the first period. Assists went to Brandon Gormley and Andy Miele.

“I liked our start. I thought our start was really good,” Edwards added. “We had a good first period. Llike them, we had a lot of guys out of the lineup. We battled get a point on the road.

Todd scored his first career goal Wednesday night against the Bruins at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.

Providence tied the contest up 8:20 into the second period when Seth Griffith and Jared Knight found defenseman David Warsofsky for his third goal of the season.

Keven Veilleux gave the lead back for the Pirates with a power-play marker 9:12 into the third period. The goal was set up by Gormley and Brendon Shinnimin.

The Pirates were 2-for-5 on the man advantage while the Bruins were 0-for-4.

Louis Dominque made 25 saves in goal for the Pirates while Niklas Svedberg made 13 stops for the Bruins.

Portland returns home Saturday night to face the Worcester Sharks at 7 p.m. at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.

“I am expecting us to play much better the last time we played against them,” Edwards said. “They gave it to us pretty good last time. I am looking forward to our guys to respond from that game tomorrow.”

The Sharks defeated the Pirates last Friday 8-2 at the DCU Center in Worcester.
