PORTLAND — Maine residents are cleaning up again after the second wintry storm in recent days.
The National Weather Service reports that Tuesday’s storm dropped up to nine inches of snow on parts of the state, slowing afternoon and evening travel. State police reduced the speed limit to 45 mph on the Maine Turnpike at the height of the storm, but no major accidents were blamed on the weather.
The Portland school department announced that public schools in the city would be closed due to the storm.
In Androscoggin County, snowfall amounts were:
- Lisbon Falls: 4.0
- Durham: 3.5
- Lewiston: 2.0
- Poland: 2.0
- Auburn: 1.5
- Turner: 1.2
- Greene: 1.0
Tuesday’s snowfall came on top of the one foot or more that fell in some areas over the weekend.
Behind the snow came some biting cold. At 6 a.m., Portland was reporting a temperature of 18 degrees with a wind chill making it feel like just 4 degrees.
