AUBURN — Officers of the American Legion William J. Rogers Post 153 and Veterans of Foreign War Capt. Frank W. Hulett Post 1603 placed Wreaths of Enduring Memory on all veterans graves at Auburn Plains Cemetery on Route 4, also known as North Plains Burying Ground, Pleasant Plains Cemetery, Plains Cemetery and Poverty Corner Cemetery.
The VFW for years had placed American flags at that cemetery. Two years ago the American Legion adopted the cemetery from the VFW as members Paul Bernard and Don Beaulieu lived in Turner and drove by daily.
Since the Legion adopted the cemetery a renovation took place and gravestones were straightened and repaired, Auburn Public Works trimmed the boundary trees and the cemetery received a facelift.
“We have verified 30 veterans in this cemetery at this time and are proud to remember and honor them in this way,” said Bernard.
More than 800 participating locations nationwide placed Wreaths of Enduring Memory for this special day of honor and remembrance at cemeteries this December, according to Tobin Slaven of Wreaths Across America.
Veterans are working hard to organize commemorative events in the area and are serving the community to the best of their abilities.
More members are sought to help continue the work of serving veterans, according to Bernard. Contact Bernard at 207-225-3990, email at [email protected] or friend him on Facebook at Paul R. Bernard.
