MOUNT DESERT — A building used as a workshop and for storage by a local tree service company was destroyed by fire Thursday night, according to town officials.

The building, located on Village Park Road off Route 102 in Somesville, was owned by Mount Desert Island Tree Service, local fire department officials indicated in a prepared statement released Friday.

According to the release, the owner, Jason Watson, told officials that when he left the building around 6:30 p.m. Thursday, everything was fine. When he returned a few minutes before 8:30 p.m., however, it was fully engulfed in flames.

No one was inside the building at the time of the fire.

Fire department officials said the one-and-a-half-story building was not insured and that, as of Friday morning, they did not have an estimate for its value.

“There were no injuries. The building is a total loss,” officials said in the release. “The cause is listed as undetermined and not suspicious.”

Cold weather hampered efforts to put out the blaze as water froze inside equipment used to douse the flames, keeping firefighters at the scene for more than four hours. Approximately 30 firefighters from Mount Desert, Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor, Tremont and Lamoine either responded to the blaze or, in the case of Lamoine, helped cover Trenton’s fire station during the fire.
