1975 – 2014

NEW VINEYARD — Samantha Jo “Sam” Wright, 38, of Kingfield, died unexpectedly on Monday, Jan. 6, in New Vineyard.

Sam was born in Waterville on June 9, 1975, the daughter of Samuel and Nancy (Torrey) Wright. Known as Sam to her many friends and family, she attended the Clinton school system and graduated from Lawrence High School in Fairfield, with the Class of 1993. Sam then attended and graduated from the Audubon Expedition Institute, and attended Endicott College in Beverly, Mass., where she graduated with a master’s degree in elementary education.

After completing her education, Sam was employed by L.L. Bean, Patagonia, Sugarloaf Mountain Corp., and the Carrabassett Recreation Department, where she served as director of its summer aquatic program. In 2008, she fulfilled her goal and dream in life by establishing the Maine Mountain Children’s House — a Montessori preschool located in Kingfield.

In 2009, Sam was married to Andrew Hodgins in a ceremony held in Barbados, which was attended by their friends and family.

Sam loved the outdoors and was a registered Maine guide. She enjoyed gardening, mountain biking, motocross and street bikes, surfing and swimming. Her favorite outdoor activity was hiking and her favorite hiking was on Mt. Rainier and in Hawaii. She was also an avid cross-country skier and loved snowshoeing in the Carrabassett Valley area, with her friends and her dog, Havana.

Survivors include her husband, Andy, who was the love of her life; daughter, Penelope Quinn Wright Hodgins; parents, Samuel and Nancy Wright; brothers, Brian and sister-in-law, Bridget Wright, and Stephen and sister-in-law, Tina Wright; sister, Bethany Wright and brother-in-law, Parker Rulison; grandmother, Jane Torrey of Lewiston; mother-in-law, Marcia Stockman of Epsom, N.H.; brother-in-law, Matthew Hodgins, also of Epsom, N.H.; sister-in-law, Victoria Best of Rochester, N.H.; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, a nephew and a grandniece.

Sam was predeceased by her grandparents, Sam and Betty Wright and Glen Torrey; and uncles, Mike Thompson and Tom Wright.
