STRONG — A car was destroyed Saturday when it hit the back of a Maine Department of Transportation plow truck on Route 4, Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr. said.

The 2010 BMW driven by James Hammond, 35, of Dallas Plantation was passing four vehicles behind the truck driven by Mark Tolman, 54, of New Portland when an oncoming vehicle came into view, Nichols said.

Hammond lost control of the BMW as he tried to pull in behind the truck. The car hit the back of the truck, bounced off and careened off the road, spinning before landing in the parking lot of Ladd’s auto dealership, he said.

The accident occurred in the rain at 2:11 p.m. Saturday, Nichols said.

The rear driver-side of the plow truck received more than $1,000 damage, he said.

Deputy Kevin Hartley reported the BMW was a total loss.
