RANGELEY — A state fire investigator said Tuesday that someone intentionally set the fire that destroyed a two-story log vacation home on Furbish Road last week.
“We have investigated the origin and cause. The origin is in the basement and the cause was intentional human element or arson,” Sgt. Joel Davis of the Office of the State Fire Marshal said.
“We don’t think it was a random act. We think the property was targeted specifically,” he said.
No arrests have been made, and the investigation is continuing, he said.
Approximately 35 firefighters from five towns responded to the fire, which was reported by a passer-by at 7:06 a.m. Thursday.
Rangeley fire Chief Tim Pellerin identified the owners as Bruce and Julie Walbridge, who arrived at their vacation home at 3 Furbish Road later Thursday from their home in Stow, Mass.
Pellerin estimated the loss at $500,000 for the house and contents.
