LEWISTON — After hearing a report of a person walking along Old Greene Road carrying a gun, two Lewiston elementary schools were put on a “soft” lockdown Thursday afternoon.

“We got word that someone was walking on the Old Greene Road, carrying a gun,” Superintendent Bill Webster said. Recalling a recent scare in the Hillview housing complex, the soft lockdown “seemed like the prudent thing to do. Safety is our top priority.”

A soft lockdown means people cannot enter or leave the building.

Both schools are in close proximity to the Old Greene Road.

Students remained in classrooms under extra-close watch of their teachers, Webster said.

By dismissal time, students were dismissed as normal, Webster said. As of 4 p.m., “we have heard nothing further from the police,” he said.
