On excellent track and with conditions considered favorable for ice racing, the first speed program of the winter was held on the Androscoggin ice track Friday afternoon under the management of the Lewiston & Auburn Driving Club. There were two classes in Friday’s races. Bina Mila, driven by John T. McGillicuddy, won all three heats and the race in Class A. In Class B the third heat proved a surprise and was hotly contested, Rudolph, driven by Morse, taking first away from Mae Forbes, driven by Rowe, in the last ten yards in 37 and one-half seconds, Dan S., driven by Allen, finished third.

A proposal to start an Air Force junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Lewiston High School generated impassioned School Committee debate Monday night, but was put on hold until more information is obtained. “It’s a feather in the cap of Lewiston to have received this offer,” said Lewiston High School Principal Richard Sykes of the school’s being put first on a list of schools considered for ROTC programs by the Air Force. He said 91 schools nationwide applied to host the program, but the Air Force only had the funds for one program in September. About 300 high schools nationwide host such an Air Force program, but Lewiston would be the first in Maine to do so. Bangor High School has an Army ROTC pro-gram. Sykes said the students in the pro-gram would take approximately one class per day in a three- or four-year sequence of classes. The classes would focus on aerospace science and leadership training.
