1941 – 2014

LEWISTON — Rita J. Humphrey, 72, of Buckfield, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Ouellette’s Adult Foster Home, after a long illness.

She was born in Lewiston on July 27, 1941, a daughter of the late Darrell and Elsie Chabot Briggs. She was educated in Auburn schools and was married to William Humphrey.

Rita was a loving mother, who worked at home raising her children. She later worked for 16 years at Central Maine Medical Center in environmental services. She enjoyed her grandchildren and gardening. She always made herself available to help anyone in need and was a very giving person, although she never boasted about her generosity.

She is survived by her husband, William, of Auburn; four daughters, Evelyn Mitchell of Leeds, Deborah Beaudette of Lewiston, Carol Mitchell of Bowdoinham and JoEllen Coolidge of Buckfield; two sons, David Mitchell of Georgia and Brian Coolidge of Lewiston; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Irene Briggs of Lewiston and Beatrice Guy and husband, Lee, of Monmouth; and a brother, John Briggs, of Lewiston.

She was predeceased by a sister, Jeannette Poussard, of New Hampshire.

Special thanks are extended to Ron Ouellette of Ouellette’s Adult Foster Home for his wonderful care of Rita.
