AARP chapter to meet Feb. 10

PARIS — The Oxford Hills Chapter of AARP will meet at noon, Monday, Feb. 10, at the First Congregational Church, East Main Street.

Meatloaf will be on the menu with a special Valentine dessert.

Cost is $6.50.

Reservations are required by Friday, Feb. 7, by calling Ruth at 744-9069.

The business meeting will begin at 1 p.m.

Members are reminded to bring their donations for the food pantry.

The program will feature Dianne Gallagher from Safe Voices.

Commercial Travelers to meet Feb. 8

MECHANIC FALLS — Twin City Council 160 of the United Commercial Travelers of America will meet at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at Bucknam Oaks. A potluck supper will be held following the business meeting. All members and guests are welcome.

Vendor Fair at Rowe Elementary

NORWAY — A vendor fair will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Guy E. Rowe Elementary School, 219 Main St.

Vendors will have cash and carry items.

Honey Bee Club workshop on Feb. 8

PARIS — Oxford Hills Honey Bee Club’s workshop will take place a 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Oxford County Extension Center, 9 Olson Road.

Deering Memorial free breakfasts

PARIS — Deering Memorial United Methodist Church continues to host free community breakfasts from 8 to 9 a.m. each Sunday.

Each week a Breakfast Team serves up a homemade hot breakfast. The menu changes weekly with some of the most popular recipes featured such as baked stuffed French toast, homemade cinnamon rolls, egg casseroles, home fries, pancakes and more. There is always cereal, toast, coffee, juice and fruit.

Organizers welcome help or donations of breakfast supplies. A free-will offering is available for anyone wishing to donate towards the cost of the breakfast.

The church is on the corner of Main and Church streets and is accessible. Parking is available behind the library.

Community organizer to speak

NORWAY — David Whittlesey of the Bowdoinham Community Development Initiative will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the Center for an Ecology-Based Economy at the Fare Share Commons at 477 Main St.

Whittlesey will share his experience as the manager of BCDI, a recently formed nonprofit that is working to promote a healthy economy in the midcoast town, especially in the area of sustainable food production.

Learn about how BCDI is helping to “stimulate growth and sustain healthy enterprises, create ‘resilient’ jobs and facilitate ‘smart growth’ among the for-profit, nonprofit, and government sectors in the local community” through a micro-lending program and collaborations with regional and statewide organizations. They have already loaned more than $50,000 to the Bowdoinham area for community development. Find out more about their success at www.bcdi.us.

A question and answer will follow with a discussion about how BCDI’s experience can help the Western Foothills area continue to build a sustainable, resilient economy.
