AUBURN — A grand jury indicted a transient Thursday on a charge of robbing a credit union in Lewiston last month.
James McAllian, 37, is charged with robbing Community Credit Union at 144 Pine St. on Jan. 6. Police responded to an emergency call there at about 10:15 a.m.
McAllian was arrested at about 2:45 p.m. that day in the Walmart parking lot in Auburn.
An Androscoggin County grand jury indicted McAllian on a count of Class B robbery, punishable by up to 10 years in prison. He also faces a felony charge of theft by unauthorized taking, punishable by up to five years in prison. A misdemeanor charge of violating condition of release carries a jail sentence of up to six months.
Witnesses told police that a man of medium build and wearing a dark jacket and hat entered the credit union wearing a dark-colored bandanna over the lower part of this face. He demanded money from a teller, threatened force and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Police reported no injuries occurred during the robbery.
McAllian was taken to Androscoggin County Jail, where he was being held Thursday in lieu of $50,000 cash bail.
